Wow! Your submissions were amazing. We received everything from poems to short stories, and enjoyed reading every one. It certainly made for a great National Coffee Day here at Filterfresh.

We’d like to congratulate our winner, Tristan Culpan, of the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, DC, who submitted the following entry:

A Horatian Ode to Coffee
The tasty roast that would appear
Must now pretend to praise clear,
Nor in the shadows sing
His numbers languishing.
‘Tis time to leave the bed a mess,
And preen your corporate dress,
Doing up each button,
Shaving under chin.
For restless workers cannot wake
Without the morning coffee to break
But urged by memory within
He staggers to the kitchen.
And like the three-fork‚ lightning, first
Striding floor tiles where it was nurst,
Did through his own side
His fiery way divide.
To get the coffee‚ sweet kick
The brew will need to bubble quick;
Lest sleep again enclose
And on the floor tiles he repose.
Then burning through the air he went,
‘Tween chairs and tables to the bench
Caffeine at long, long last
Did through his body blast.
‘Tis madness to resist or blame
The force of coffee grounds in flame;
And, if we would speak true,
Much to man is due,
Who from his private kitchen where
He lives revived and aware,
As if his highest plot
To heat the coffee pot,
Could by industrious valour climb
To ruin the great work of Time,
And cast the kingdom old
Into another mould.
But coffee against fate complain,
Fill the cup to the top again!
Keep us to morning break
We drink up, strong or weak.
Thence the coffee machine has borne
A hot mug might adorn,
While round the mug bands
We clap our warming hands.
He nothing common did or mean
Upon that memorable scene,
But with his desiring eye
The goblet did he spy;
Urged by the gods with helpful flight
To vindicate his helpless right,
He tilted his comely head
Back envigorated.
This was the memorable hour
Which first assured the forced power.
So when they did design
Coffee machines, first line
A sleepy head, where they begun,
Did urge the engineers to run;
And with that the fellow
Saw a happy morrow.
Drinkers affirm their praises best,
And have, now energized, confest
How good they are, how just,
And fit for higher trust;
He to the office building departs
On the sub-way with jump-start heart;
He cuts and runs fast
To catch the train at half-past
In crisp, white-collared shirt
(Don’t spill a drop on the boss’ skirt).
So when the clock strikes nine
Be sure to have logged in.
But thou, the work‚ and fortune‚ son,
March indefatigably on;
And for the last effect
Still keep thy back erect;
Thanks to the force it has to wake
Another cup he then must make
The same drink that did gain
A power, must it maintain.

Thank you for your amazing effort, Tristan. We hope that you’ll enjoy your new coffeemaker and coffees, and that your employer will enjoy a month of free coffee!* [*maximum value $500]

We received so many great entries. The following have earned “Honorable Mention” and will soon be receiving a gift of appreciation.

Dan Ober, Quality Custom Cabinetry, New Holland, PA

Throughout the course of human events, we can observe the coming and going of things; for every thing there is a time and a season, the old Proverb states. Empires come, and Empires go; Dynasties begin, and Dynasties end. Greatness is temporal, in most cases, and as transient as the wind and tide. Greatness is that elusive object for which so many long, and so few obtain. As with everything else, greatness comes and goes; continually passing like a torch from one beholder to another, each wishing to hold on to it as long as possible.
When considering the greatest of all time, one must consider all the holders of the torch, and justly compare great with greatest. In some categories of greatness there are few torch holders; in others there are many. In the histories of humanity, many beverages have held the title “Greatest,” but only one may stand as greatest of all time; the Great of the Great! What sets one beverage above others? The answer is simple: universal and perpetual greatness. Only one beverage satisfies both of these qualifiers, and that beverage is coffee. Coffee is universally great because it is loved by everyone. That is a fact. There are only two types of people in the world: People who admit they love coffee, and those that don’t admit they love coffee. Coffee has achieved perpetual greatness because it has the staying power to be Greatest until the end of time itself.
Coffee will never cease to be on the forefront of human minds; it will never die out like some fad; it will be challenged, but it will never be overcome. No, it will not.
This is why coffee is the greatest beverage of all time.

Patricia Wuensche, Desert Springs Cancer Care, Phoenix, AZ

I work for a cancer center and we couldn’t function without the Filterfresh coffee maker in our lobby. The soothing comfort of our coffee and hot chocolate fits right in with the soothing comfort of our office environment. Patients and their families are with us often for hours during chemotherapy and it is our pleasure to serve them flavored coffee to help them through these grueling hours. We can’t keep the hot chocolate filled up fast enough to keep up with demand. Our cancer center is located in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona and it doesn’t matter if the temperature outside is 110 degrees — our patients still want their hot chocolate. Thanks for providing this service to our patients. They appreciate it and so do we.

Debra Lewis, Bristol Toyota, Bristol, RI

Ode to Juan Valdez
I drag my weary self from bed
Bristles rising from my head
Brain all foggy
eyes half mast
It’s 5a.m. I need a blast.
Aroma wafts throughout the kitchen
Slowly now the fog is liftin’.
I pour a cup of strong, dark brew
It tastes so good I pour a few.
The joy those tiny beans can bring
Another cannot best
Coffee is, as we all know,
A cut above the rest.

Thanks again to everyone who participated. We hope you had a wonderful National Coffee Day and have a joyous holiday season!
