We visited Pershing Square in LA on Tuesday and Orchestra Hall at Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis on Thursday. What a fun time! Hundreds of business people rushing to get “Back to the Grind” stopped to slow down in the afternoon with us and enjoy free coffee and fun giveaways.

Filterfresh gave away free coffee and offered a chance to win a free lunch (or dinner) to people who stopped by the "Back to the Grind" booth in Pershing Square, LA.

September may be “Back to the Grind”, but you can ease back into your routine with fresh, top-of-the-line coffee. You deserve it, so demand it!

Happy National Coffee Day!  We look forward to celebrating with you.

Here are a few things to consider:

• Reuse. Ok, we’re not going to tell you to reuse coffee grounds (that would just be gross), but how about encouraging employees to bring in their own mugs or offering reusable ones in your café or kitchen? Some offices even have fun with it and hold “best mug” competitions (where employees post pictures of their smiling mugs (and their coffee mugs) on the bulletin board (online or offline).  We even know of one advertising agency that lets their clients select their own special mugs and keeps the mugs in a display case, ready for them to use when they visit.
  

  Encourage employees to bring in their own coffee mugs -- maybe even hold a contest to find the best (or "ugliest"?) mug.

• Recycle. Did you know that many types of paper coffee filters, pods and coffee grounds can be composted? Why not start a compost for coffee grounds in your office kitchen? How? Place a reseal able plastic container (such as the kind meant for cereal) under the counter and display a note asking employees to compost.  Solicit a volunteer to take the container home once a week to empty it into their home compost bin, or set one up outside your office building if possible. Many towns and cities offer compost bins for sale.

• Reduce.  Consider options such as waste to energy, Terracycle or single cup brewers that create less waste. Or opt for a single serve coffee delivery system such as Latte Lounge,  Javanation or Suprema  that doesn’t use pre-portioned packaged cups, but instead grinds and brews the coffee as its needed.  Models are available for all size offices.  Ask your Filterfresh rep for details about these options.

Some other tips:

• Be efficient. Consider energy-efficient single-serve coffee makers such as Flavia that offer energy star ratings and energy efficiency settings. Many Keurig brewers are equipped with an Energy Savings Mode Auto Off feature that lets you keep the machine in stand-by mode. The initial heating mode when you turn on the power takes about three minutes.  Contact your Filterfresh to get details on units with energy-saving modes.

• Use timers. If your coffee machine doesn’t have an energy efficiency setting and keeps water hot 24-7, consider using a plug-in timer that will turn it off during hours when employees aren’t using it.  It’s a good idea for your water cooler as well.

• Get insulated. Consider insulated coffee pots for your drip-maker rather than burners to keep your coffee warm. Most quality office coffee machines have good insulation that will keep water hot for longer and reduce energy costs.

•  Bulk up. Think about buying your supplies in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging and conserve energy during delivery. Also consider choosing products, such as sweeteners and creamers, in large containers instead of individually wrapped to reduce waste.

• Go organic. You can help the environment by choosing organic and fair-trade coffee products.  Consider using earth-friendly products such as wood stir-sticks and napkins made from renewable resources. Or better yet, use washable spoons and towels.
