From reducing your risk of cancer and heart disease, to staving off diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, the reported positive effects of coffee have been well-documented in recent years. Here’s a round-up of a few articles highlighting coffee’s healthy side.

Some benefits of coffee include:

Reduced cancer risk

Studies show regular consumption of coffee reduces the overall risk of cancer by 20%, and liver cancer by 45%. For some types of breast cancer, coffee drinkers are 57% less at risk. Studies have also linked coffee consumption to a lower risk of prostate cancer in men.

Stronger immune system

One study showed that coffee and tea drinkers were 50% less likely to get infections by “super bugs” such as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus bacteria — a.k.a. MRSA.

Performance boost for athletes

Coffee makes you more alert, you react faster, and you don’t feel like you’re working as hard, all of which add up to training or competing at a higher intensity for a longer period of time and being more agile in a pack, according to sports nutrition experts.

Stronger heart

Numerous studies in recent years have reported that drinking coffee may be good for the cardiovascular system and might even help prevent strokes.  In March, Swedish researchers announced results of a large study showing that coffee seemed to reduce the risk of stroke in women by up to 25%.  And a study of more than 81,000 men and women in Japan showed that drinking one or two cups of coffee a day reduced the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by up to 23%. The findings were published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Boosts brain power

Recent studies have shown that heavy doses of caffeine might help prevent or delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Additional research shows that an element in coffee in particular (not just caffeine) may reduce inflammation that leads to the disease. The findings, described in the June 28, 2011 Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, provide the first evidence that caffeinated coffee offers protection against Alzheimer’s that is not possible with other caffeine-containing drinks.

Less risk of diabetes

A 2004 Harvard University study  showed that people who drink coffee regularly have a significantly reduced the risk of onset of type 2 diabetes, compared to non-coffee drinking people. And a more recent study published in a 2009 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that a daily dose of coffee, decaf or tea can reduce the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes by 25 to 35 percent.
